This Filson Clarkston Jac-Shirt is made with durable Bedford Cord fabric, a densely woven fabric with a distinctive lengthwise ribbed texture. It's often compared to corduroy, but unlike corduroy, which has cut pile yarns creating its signature "wales," bedford cord's ridges are woven into the fabric itself. This is achieved through a specific weave structure that creates raised vertical lines with sunken lines in between. The fabric's name is believed to have originated from either the town of Bedford, England, or New Bedford, Massachusetts, a prominent 19th-century textile hub.

HISTORICAL AND MODERN USES

Historically, bedford cord was used for a variety of heavy-duty applications. Due to its durability and resistance to the elements, it was a popular choice for military uniforms, particularly for cavalrymen and officers. Its hard-wearing qualities also made it ideal for workwear for miners and railroad workers, as well as equestrian apparel like riding breeches. Today, bedford cord is still appreciated for its textured look and resilience, and is used for durable clothing items like shirts, jackets and trousers.
